Such a touchy subject, tobacco cessation! So many of us are or were in approach- avoidance mode for most of our tobacco-using years. We’d talk at length about quitting, and then firmly defend our right to smoke as soon as someone else suggested quitting would be a good idea. “You’re going to have to pry them out of my hand!” When we become as tenacious about our quest for freedom, it is amazing what we can do. EFT can be a powerful tool for this process. So many of us “buttheads” – a term I like because it speaks not only to our connection with tobacco but also to our hard-headedness – have formed a long-term intimate relationship with tobacco. There are feelings and needs we share nowhere else, some we may never have identified. So many needs are met with tobacco, some of which are challenging to recognize or express, much less own. With EFT, we don’t need to articulate those needs or resolve the ambiguity to begin addressing it. We can tap quickly through a round of EFT before putting a smoke or dip in our mouth. We don’t need to see it as “either-or”. In this way, EFT works with the approach- avoidance of tobacco cessation. If we still feel like using tobacco after a round of tapping, we can do so more consciously, and accept ourselves and our progress at the same time. EFT is a way to quite literally take our freedom into our own hands. When the romance with tobacco is ending and you’re ready to start taking your life back, there is a book to help you on your way: Kick Butts, Take Names. It is a multi-faceted response to the challenge of tobacco cessation, including the wonder of EFT. Freedom is just around the corner! Joanna Cummings M.Ed., LMHC, LADAC, NCC and Butthead Links: |
